“AAC opens doors to connection, learning, and belonging.”
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology (AT) refers to tools, devices, software, or equipment designed to help individuals with disabilities perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible for them. These technologies aim to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of people with physical, sensory, cognitive, or learning impairments.
Types of Assistive Technology include:
Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs, walkers, prosthetics
Hearing Aids: Amplifiers, cochlear implants, FM systems
Visual Aids: Screen readers, braille displays, magnifying software
Learning Tools: Text-to-speech software, voice recognition tools, audiobooks, special keyboards
Environmental Controls: Smart home devices adapted for use by people with limited mobility
AAC: Speech generating devices
What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes any method of communication that helps individuals express their thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas when they cannot use verbal speech effectively. AAC can range from low-tech options like gestures, sign language, and picture boards to high-tech devices such as speech-generating tablets and specialized apps.
For children who are nonverbal, AAC is critical for their development and quality of life. It gives them a way to:
Communicate their needs and wants, reducing frustration and behaviors caused by not being understood.
Participate in learning and social interactions, building relationships with peers and adults.
Develop language and cognitive skills, as communication access supports overall learning.
Gain independence, by having a voice to advocate for themselves in daily routines and future environments.
AAC does not replace speech; it supports and enhances communication, and for some children, it can even encourage spoken language development over time. Every child deserves a reliable way to communicate, and AAC ensures they are seen, heard, and included.
